What does citizenship mean in a world on the move? Economic inequality, conflict, climate change, and globalized diasporas have converged to send more migrants than ever before in history across international borders. And yet, in both porous borderlands and hyperdiverse cities, there is little coherence in how citizenship is conferred and imagined. People move through the world with multiple and often contradictory paper statuses, and navigate belonging and exclusion in increasingly informal, emotional terms. Through a discussion of realities on the ground and political backlash in South Asia (specifically the northeast corner) and Europe (specifically the southern border and Germany), we will unpack some of the challenges surrounding citizenship and belonging today.
