FASPE Symposium
Saturday, November 16 from 9 am – 6 pm
Offices of Holland & Knight (787 7th Ave 31st Floor, New York, NY 10019).
“The symposium, Changing Life as We Know It – Exploring the Role of Genetic Modification and Our Understanding of Humanity is open to FASPE alumni and the wider community and will focus on the ethics of genetic technologies in contexts ranging from therapeutic to eugenic, through the lens of deafness and hearing loss. Thorsten Wagner, FASPE’s Executive Director for Strategy and Academics, will open up the program with an exploration of the historical conceptions of eugenics, followed by keynote speaker Vardit Ravitsky, CEO of The Hastings Center. After lunch, a panel of experts across several fields will respond to a series of scenarios surrounding parental choice about avoiding or inviting the conception of a genetically-deaf child, as well as exploring different forms and contexts of enhancements achieved through mechanical assistance vs drugs vs epigenetic editing. Panelists include Teresa Blankmeyer Burke, Anna Louie Sussman, and Devan Stahl (more to be announced). The questions to be raised will cross disciplines and invite us all to think more deeply about intended and unintended possibilities and consequences.”
